Time-Lapse Video of Mom Putting Twins to Bed Will Make You Appreciate Your Routine

I've never met a mom who didn't want to scream, "Go the f*ck to sleep!" at least once in their child's toddler years — that's why the book was such a hit with parents everywhere! But Henriette Jonassen, a Norwegian mom of almost-3-year-old twins Leon and Nathaniel, deserves a signed, framed copy of the book. As she writes on her blog:The resulting, time-lapse video of their current bedtime routine is like an Abbott and Costello video. Every time one goes down, the other pops up or sneaks away or dances in the doorway. It's nothing short of hysterical. As Henriette explains, in Summer months, the sun doesn't set until late (around 10 p.m.), so getting the boys to sleep requires a deviation from her normal routine. Let's just hope she rests up this Winter, when the sun is only out for five hours some days.

Mom Fined $145 For Calling Santa

Ho ho oh no! One mom's attempt to keep her kids' behavior in check may have landed her on Santa's permanent naughty list. Last week, Rachel, who has withdrawn her last name for privacy, was driving her 2- and 4-year-old daughters around town when they started going at it in the backseat. When the girls refused to stop fighting, the New Jersey mom did what any parent would do at this time of year: threaten to call Santa. Rachel pulled out her phone, "dialed" Santa's digits, and then reported her girls to the man in red.

"I was telling Santa my girls weren't behaving [and] weren't being respectful," Rachel tells a local news outlet. "I even brought up the naughty list." But just as Rachel was ending her "phone call," she passed a police officer who proceeded to pull her over for talking on the phone while driving, which is against the law in New Jersey.

"I didn't want to ruin Santa Claus for my girls, so I was trying to be vague about it," she says. "So I told the officer my girls weren't behaving and that I had to call Santa Claus. I was trying to make him understand without giving it up. And he's just looking at me like I'm crazy." He was about to let her off the hook, when a second officer pulled up to the scene and saw that Rachel hadn't had her vehicle inspected, an infraction that would normally result in them impounding the car. Though the officers debated her punishment for some time, they eventually decided to issue Rachel a $145 ticket.

One Thing You Should Never Say to Your Child

"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." When I was little that rhyme was the big, bad, powerful statement we used to ward off the vicious attacks of other kids.

That rhyme gave us power but didn't protect us from the sting of the words. It didn't stop the ugly words from sinking in and taking root. It didn't stop those words from becoming the way we saw ourselves or from imagining it was the way others saw us, too.

What got me thinking about this was a parent-child interaction I witnessed this week in the grocery store, and this conversation about basic needs for healthy relationships, in which a member named Nancy R. shared the thought that "The emotional hurt may be hidden from others, but it plays on your mind, heart, and soul."

If you remember the sting of mean words spoken to you as a child, why would you ever label your kids in ways that could be hurtful to them? I'm not talking about labels like "autistic" or "sensory seeking"; I'm talking about calling your child "sloppy," "liar," "stupid," "awful," etc.

Do parents who do this believe that labeling their child will change something about them or help correct a behavior? Can that ever work?

10 Things to Never Say to Pregnant Women

Pregnant women constantly receive well wishes and positive remarks about the new chapter in their lives, but unfortunately they also find themselves the recipients of some unflattering zingers. Such comments are not always intentionally rude, insensitive, or inappropriate, but they can easily come across the wrong way to a woman who is on a hormonal roller coaster. Here are our top ten things most pregnant women don't want to hear.

Do You Yell? The Great Debate Over Whether It Hurts or Helps

Today, as I was getting ready to write my weekly column, I looked at the community to see readers' comments about How to Teach Kids to Learn From Their Mistakes, an article I'd written a while ago.

Your comments really reflected the full range of opinions on the subject of yelling. So instead of responding to each comment, I thought it would be more beneficial to continue the conversation here so everyone reading can weigh in, too.

(So this does not become a vehicle to just disagree and judge others, i.e. yelling on paper, I removed the names and, for the most part, used only bits of the comments. It's not my intention to misrepresent anyone. If you want to read the comments in their entirety, go to the community.)

Also, because I believe my job is to inspire and expand the way people think about parenting topics, here are some questions to think about before you add a comment.

120 New Baby and Kid Products We Can't Wait to See in 2015

If you thought stores were already filled with exciting gear for babies and kids, just wait until you see what's around the corner. We've just returned from the ABC Kids Expo in Las Vegas — the largest annual juvenile-products trade show in North America — and were privy to the latest innovations in gear for kids of all ages.

From a stroller that converts from a standard three-wheel buggy to a jogging stroller with the flick of a switch, to an infant car seat that reclines flat out when it's placed in a stroller, the innovations were plenty. There were also new products that turn every cup into a sippy cup, luxurious (and washable!) merino wool blankets for babies, baby monitors that don't release any harmful rays to tots, and plenty more!

If you're following us on Instagram (which you should be — we're @POPSUGARMoms), you got a sneak peek as we made our way through the convention, but there was plenty we didn't have time to show. Here are 120 products that will be hitting store shelves in the coming months!

Dad to Family: Here's the Truth About Autistic Kids and the Holidays

After nearly seven years of being a father of twins diagnosed with autism, I have experienced some "unique" Christmases. Since I married into a family that values Christmas dinner and festivities shared by all relatives at the same distant location in the "country," I have been fortunate to see Santa Claus leave gifts at my place for my children and had the luxury of transporting those gifts afar for the festivities.

Guilty as Charged! 10 Bad Habits Every Parent Should Surrender

When you hear the words "bad habits," your thoughts may turn to drinking in excess, smoking cigarettes, and the like. But once kids come into the picture, every move you make is influencing their actions, including those previously innocent-enough vices. A careless profanity here and there is no big deal for your average adult, but no one wants to take responsibility for the toddler shouting obscenities on the playground! Here, 10 everyday habits for moms and dads to ditch.

It's a Girl (Times 4!) For the Gardner Family

Call it a belated Christmas present. A few months after their pregnancy announcement went viral, Tyson and Ashley Gardner have welcomed their miraculous quadruplets into the world. The Utah-based couple shared the news on Facebook, where they have been keeping more than 300,000 fans updated on the pregnancy. They shared the initial news yesterday afternoon, noting that the contractions had started and the babies were on their way. Less than an hour later, the parents (though we assume Ashley was too preoccupied to update Facebook) announced that the babies arrived via C-section and were doing great. Though they have yet to share the babies' names, Tyson and Ashley did reveal that all four are girls. The couple also announced that they have been working with TLC and will be bringing their pregnancy and parenting journey to TV in the near future.

13 Things You Should Stop Saying to Your Kids Now

Sticks and stones may break kids' bones, put a parent's words can truly hurt them. In moments of anger and frustration, we tend to say things to or around our children without thinking of the consequences. There are some, like our favorite four-letter word, that evoke laughter from kids. And there are other, less humorous phrases that can make kids cry, lower their self-esteem, and potentially ruin their relationship with a parent. Though it may take some extra effort, here are a few phrases you should stop saying to your children (along with some compelling reasons why) immediately.

How to Be a Better Parenting Team

Nothing tests a relationship — no matter how secure and happy it might be — quite like parenthood. From the day you learn that kids are entering the picture, there are decisions to be made (Do we bank the cord blood? Circumcise the baby? Hire a midwife?), and while the themes of the issues at hand may evolve, they never get any easier. Add to your new docket of responsibilities the fact that one or both of you is likely going through life on less sleep than you'd ever imagined you could function on, and it's a recipe for conflict.

As one year comes to a close and a new one begins, we're resolving to recommit to approaching parenting as a team. Here's the plan.

Who Pays For What in a Wedding

We're way past the age where we have to stick to certain outdated rules when it comes to weddings, such as the bride's parents footing the bill for most of the whole wedding. This tradition stems from the times when parents had to include a dowry to make the bride more attractive, since she won't be able to earn income. These days, many couples are splitting the costs evenly among themselves, with and without their parents.

Take a look at the traditional cost breakdown of a wedding for reference. But keep in mind that no one is required to follow these rules — it all depends on your own situation.

Is This Facebook's Creepiest Feature?

Earlier this year, Facebook rolled out something called Nearby Friends, a opt-in feature that takes the term "Facebook stalking" to a whole new level. If you turn on Nearby Friends, Facebook will use your GPS location to notify friends when you're in the area. The reverse is also true — if you enter the same area as your friends, Facebook will tell you who is around.

Creeped out? The social networking company stresses that Nearby Friends is optional. Both you and your friends must have the feature enabled to see each other's locations. Your location can also be limited to specific lists (for example: friends, family, or "close friends").

Facebook shows the proximity of friends by miles (one mile away, 1/2 mile away, etc.), then gives you the option to share your exact whereabouts in real time. If you tap the arrow button next to a friend's name, you can select how long your precise location will be shared, plus add a note.

Our friends at ReadWrite say that no one trusts Facebook to power the future, so we're interested to see how many users have opted in to Nearby Friends since it opened to users in April. Real-time tracking apps (like Find My Friends) already exist in the marketplace, so Facebook might be on to something.

8 Reasons Hiring Managers Haven't Called Back

It's one thing when you don't receive a reply from an employer after sending your resume and cover letter, but things get more personal when you don't hear back after a job interview. Waiting for a response is stressful and it's easy to let your mind run wild when coming up with reasons the employer hasn't called. Was it your hair? Should you have answered a certain question differently? Put the kabosh on your what-if thought process; usually an employer hasn't called back due to one of these eight reasons.

Impress Guests With the Good Fortune Cocktail

The following post was originally featured on Supergolden Bakes and written by Lucy Parissi, who is part of POPSUGAR Select Food.It has been such a long time since I blogged a cocktail recipe! What is WRONG with me? I will tell you what. Someone (who shall remain nameless but let's just say we have been married for a long time) put a big shelf unit in front of all the spirits, making it practically impossible to retrieve any of the bottles without having cans, pots, and pans raining down. I mean blocking the ALCOHOL. It's all kinds of wrong. The shelves had to move in order to make space for the Christmas tree, liberating the "home bar" (a cardboard box) in the process. We have been camping out in the living room for over three months while the kitchen renovation progresses; mostly everything is either in the way (the Magimix is on the floor) or completely inaccessible. I long for the day when I have a proper kitchen again!

I have been jotting down ideas for festive cocktails for some time, so hopefully I get them all out of my system in time for the holidays. This pretty little number was inspired by the Negroni – a classic cocktail which uses equal amounts gin, Campari and red vermouth. I used dry vermouth and bourbon here together with a little pomegranate and orange juice to make a very drinkable cocktail that's easy to serve at a party – make a pitcher of the mix adding ice just before serving. And if you don't like bourbon (or don't have any), replace with gin and use grapefruit in place of the orange juice. You see? I have thought of everything.

Pomegranate juice is easily available these days (my son's favorite "red juice") and although you don't have to add the pomegranate seeds, they are very pretty and the inspiration for the name, The Good Fortune. You see, pomegranate is considered a symbol of fertility, prosperity, and regeneration, and it is traditional in Greece to smash one in the entrance of your home every New Year to usher good fortune. I remember doing that as a child – I may have to revive the tradition to bless the new kitchen but I will certainly wrap it in something first. You see the background used in these photos? That is my new kitchen flooring. It's marble. Yes, it stains.

21 Modern Mysteries You Won't Be Able to Put Down

It all began with an early obsession with Nancy Drew, then I moved on to Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie, and before I knew it I was devouring any book that promised thrills, intrigue, and murder. Is there a detective in it? I'll read it. Bonus points if the protagonist is a woman. And the cherry on top is if the author is British or Scandinavian (or Irish). That said, Gone Girl is one of my favorite books of all time, so if you feel the same, you'll probably love my other picks. Obviously, this isn't an exhaustive list — I've only included books I can vouch for (aka that I've read) — but here are 21 modern mysteries guaranteed to keep you up all night, in order of tame to terrifying.

Lady Gaga Named the Newest Face of Shiseido

You've Been Applying Your Sunscreen and Concealer in the Wrong Order

It seems like there's a new beauty invention to add to our routine every week (micellar water, lip primer, what?). And with all those bottles and tubes lining the vanity, we get a little confused about which product goes when. The sequence in which you should apply your skin care and makeup in the morning (or evening) is very important. The right layering technique will ensure you get the maximum efficacy of each product, but it's mostly intuitive. For example, sunscreen should go on after moisturizer for the best protection, and apply eye shadow ahead of foundation so any fallout won't smudge on your face. But when you start inserting facial oils and contouring powders into the mix, it's enough to make a woman's head spin! Don't worry; we're here to save you from these easy-to-make beauty mistakes. Keep reading to get everything in order from skin care to cosmetics for your most flawless face.

Here's the thing: we, like many, are not exempt from the perils of muffin top, underarm fat, back fat, "mom butt" — you get the picture. But, rather than accentuate our not-so-sexy features, we're looking to disguise, conceal, and banish those unflattering bits with some strategic styling (and, of course, a healthy lifestyle). It's all about emphasizing what we love most about our bodies — and, OK, looking insanely good in an LBD, à la Brigitte Bardot — so no more fashion snafus from here on out. Just keep reading to learn how to update your look for the New Year.

This Treadmill Workout Is Like Having Your Own Personal Running Coach

Given that running is such a solitary sport, it can be quite an endeavor to push past a plateau. It's not at all unusual for months to go by before realizing you've been doing the same stale run over and over again. Equinox's latest class offering, Precision Running, changes that for the better. Designed to help students become both stronger and faster runners, the entire class takes place on a treadmill and is led by an extensively trained (and motivating) running coach. Trainer David Siik, the creator of Precision Running, explains that no two classes are alike, but all will help you progress to become a better runner — before you know it, you're setting PRs.

For those not able to make it to a Precision Running class, David designed this pyramid speed workout to use the next time a treadmill beckons you. "The challenge is to build speed as intervals get shorter going up a pyramid. You must then use your fastest speed you reach at the end of the first segment on every interval as they get longer again in reverse," says David. Before beginning, David says to imagine the fastest you can go for a 30-second sprint, then start this workout exactly two miles per hour under that goal. (We've included some suggested speeds depending on your level.) The workout is designed in such a way that even though you never reach your peak sprinting pace, you are still conditioning the body to become faster overall. This method puts less impact on the body, preventing injury later down the road

How to Clean Out Your Closet For the New Year — and Then Reward Yourself After

Look — no one dreads a closet cleanout more than I do. Aside from the fact that it takes both time and a lot of physical effort, I hate getting rid of my clothes. After all, I'm of the belief that everything I own comes with a handful of memories. Like, I graduated college in that pleated, asymmetrical dress; had my first kiss in that graphic tee; and gave a horribly embarrassing presentation in those plaid, high-waisted trousers.

But as much as I hate to throw those pieces away, I'm well aware that some of them have an expiration date. Whether it's because the season's changing, certain trends are retired (for now), or threads are pulling, Jan. 1 means it's officially time for a wardrobe haul. And I'm inviting you on my journey.

Below are the 11 items I'm throwing away, but not necessarily into the garbage. There are plenty of places where you can donate to those in need, and you can always sell your threads too — whether it's at your local thrift store or on eBay. Make sure to maintain an ethical sensibility and recognize that just because you're through with a top doesn't mean someone else can't make use of it.

And once that's done, it's time to shop for replacements, which is, of course, the fun part. Because how else would you reward yourself for a job well done? Scroll down to see how I'm refreshing my wardrobe so it's completely ready for the New Year. Who said that Spring was the season for cleaning?

Kate Middleton Didn't Wear a Single Bad Outfit This Year

It's been a whirlwind year for the Duchess of Cambridge. She's attended many an event in her native Britain, crisscrossed the globe making major stops in both Australia and the US, and finally announced that her second child is on the way! But lucky for us, that also means she's stepped out in more amazing outfits than we can count. And while she's always managed to make us swoon in her favorite pieces from designers like Jenny Packham and Alexander McQueen, this year may have been her chicest yet — think elegant coats and dresses, a few curve-skimming pairs of skinny jeans (gasp), and, lately, looks with an extra dose of daring thanks to her new stylist. And don't forget, Kate will always have our hearts for outfit-repeating like a total pro. We're being totally honest when we tell you, there isn't a bad look to be found! Adam Goldberg Shares Happy Baby News After Stillbirth Tragedy

Adam Goldberg and his girlfriend Roxanne Daner are expecting! The Fargo star shared the happy news earlier this month when he appeared on WTF Podcast with Mac Maron on Dec. 18. He said, "My girlfriend Roxanne is pregnant. We weren't going to tell anybody — I mean it's obvious. She's gigantic. But we weren't going to tell anyone unless you ran into her." While many celebrities choose to keep their pregnancies under wraps, Adam actually has a much more tragic reason for being wary about discussing his girlfriend's pregnancy. "I haven't said this," Adam continued. "I haven't talked about this at all. My girlfriend — we've been together for several years — we had a stillborn child about a year and a half ago. I've talked about it but not really in a public fashion. Totally awful, especially because I had been ambivalent of having children. It was four days after the due date. It was horrifying and it was my worst fear." Adam didn't share Roxanne's current due date but she did show off her baby bump back in August
when she joined Adam on the red carpet at the Emmys.

How to Make Sure Your Kids Won't Hate You When They Grow Up

I keep a small painting of a mother holding a baby in my office so I'm reminded to remain focused on love. Kids do things and parents get mad, so staying focused on love can be tough. When anger and strong reactions happen, love can feel very far away.

Another time when love can feel very far away is when we adults complain about our parents, as mom-of-two Laura H. did in a long post about her anger at her father. These conversations usually contain a lot of blame, resentment, anger, and lack of forgiveness. Don't get me wrong; there are situations where it's appropriate to cut off a relationship. (This article is not meant to address harsh verbal, physical, or sexual abuse.) However, for many adults, their anger seems to be related to waiting for their parents to apologize for what they did to them as children. Waiting for an apology from a parent can easily cause resentment and distance in the relationship.

What's your story?

What type of connection do you wish you had with your parents?

And what type of connection do you hope to have with your own grown children?

You might be thinking, they're kids, why bother thinking about our adult connection now, it's years away. The reason is, childhood is when the wounds that can cause resentment and distance occur, so now is the time to think about this.

Years ago, while whining about my parents, a wise woman said, "How would you feel if your children never forgave you for the mistakes you made as a mother?"

I instantly got teary and began connecting the dots. I realized I'm going to want understanding and forgiveness from my children for the pain I caused them. I'm not a perfect parent, far from it, and I hope they keep that in mind when remembering their childhood.

Then it dawned on me: I had not been that generous with my parents. I'd never thought of them as people, I'd never thought of them as having lives of their own. They were "the parents."

It never occurred to me as a child, or as an adult, that my parents were actually beyond upset and mortified at their behavior. I'd only been focusing on the damage "I perceived" was done to me.

It never occurred to me that there may be some "adult details" that led up to my parents saying or doing something that created my wounds.

I never remembered that they told me many times that they were really sorry, just like we tell our kids when we behave in an over-the-top-way. I only remembered the event and my kid-like translation of the event. I have no memory of their apology.

It's normal that adults remember the event and the apology. It's normal that kids skip over the apology and hold on to the wound. It's normal.

Still, my head was spinning. I wondered if there was anything I could do to lessen the impact of this normal emotional rhythm with my kids. Then it hit me that one thing I could do was forgive my parents. But as if on cue, I hit that wound-like place where I thought, "I can't forgive them; if I forgive them, isn't that letting them off the hook?"

As Nokuthula K. says, "I want to forgive, but can't forget."

What I've come to realize, and what every therapist will tell you, is forgiveness is about making yourself whole. Forgiveness gets rid of the fire in your belly. Forgiveness turns angry reactions back into compassion, empathy, and acceptance. Forgiveness isn't for the other person — it's for you.

So how does forgiving your parents affect the relationship you'll have with your adult children?

10 Things to Know Before Being Induced

Chris Picco met his future wife, Ashley, while they were both volunteering in the relief effort at New York City's Ground Zero. Months after 9/11, the teenagers each wanted to help others in a time of darkness — a passion that continued until Ashley's last days. On Nov. 8, the pregnant 30-year-old tragically passed away in her sleep, leaving behind her loving husband and a son who was delivered via emergency C-section. Lennon James Picco was due in late February 2015 but clung to life in spite of his tragic early delivery.

During this time of unspeakable loss, Chris chose to celebrate his newborn son's life — something he believed would be important to his departed wife. Ashley had spent her adult life working as a nurse who counseled young mothers, and Chris knew that she would want him to focus on baby Lennon instead of grieving. As a talented musician, the new father decided to bond with his ailing son the best way he knew how: through song. Toting a guitar into Loma Linda University Hospital's NICU ward, Chris serenaded his baby with this tearjerking rendition of Ashley's favorite song, The Beatles' "Blackbird."

Guess Which Celebs Have Lived in Jennifer Lawrence's New Home?

Apparently celebrities pass along homes as much as they pass along significant others these days. Reportedly, Jennifer Lawrence just paid more than $7 million for a Beverly Hills mansion that has quite the reputation. At the Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1 premiere, Jennifer had a lot to say about her new home.

"I just moved into a house. I am in the middle of [decorating it]. It's Ellen [DeGeneres]'s old house. It was Jessica Simpson's old house. It's like the neighborhood whore," she said. "I was outside and some girl was like 'I grew up in this house.' Beat it, kid. Everybody's lived in this house."

Meet Your Go-To Salad Dressing

Although my fridge is stocked with all sorts of sauces and condiments, the one thing you won't find is bottled salad dressing. Why? It's really easy to make a simple and delicious vinaigrette. It takes only a couple of minutes to make and is far healthier than anything processed.

While there are tons of recipes out there, this one — which comes from my girlfriend Sonia — is my everyday vinaigrette. It's a mixture of olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, and Dijon mustard.

Sometimes I'll throw in chopped herbs or a few tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese or a shallot instead of garlic; feel free to make the recipe your own.

Imgur user lassann shared these hilarious notes left by couples that show what true love is all about, even if it isn't always pretty.

How Long Should You Wait to Work Out After Eating?

How you space out meals during the course of the day might not make a big difference in the calorie department, but it has huge implications on your workout performance. Not only can ineffectively fueling your body hinder your performance, but also, eating too much before exercise can interfere with your goals. When it comes to eating before exercise, it's all about timing.

No matter what time of day you choose to exercise, make sure to plan your workout two to three hours after your meal. Going overboard with too much food right before a workout will leave you feeling sluggish and can lead to stomach discomfort. The last thing you want is your workout habits to hinder your digestion process.

If it's been a few hours since your last meal, then most experts agree that you should eat a small snack one hour before your workout to properly fuel your body. A combination of carbs and a little protein, all under 200 calories, will do the trick. If you're not sure what constitutes a good choice, then check out these healthy pre-workout snacks for inspiration. And if you're going for an early workout session, then remember that exercising on an empty stomach — even when you first wake up — isn't ideal. It might feel tough to eat first thing in the morning, but fueling your body with proper nutrients is essential for your workout. Consider one of these light breakfast snacks you can enjoy an hour before your morning workout.

The Habit That Will Help You Lose the Holiday Weight

In the December issue of Harvard Health Review, researchers note that it's not fat that you should be worried about if you are watching your weight — it's refined carbs. Recent studies have shown that refined carbs and simple sugars may be worse for your heart than saturated fats and that sticking to a low-carb, high-protein diet is the key to weight-loss success. But since we can't live off holiday ham alone, here's a simple solution: when faced with carb choices, go with low-GI foods, which slow down the rate that glucose (sugar) gets introduced into your body. High-GI foods, in contrast, cause a spike in your blood sugar as well as insulin, causing you to crave more sugary foods when your glucose levels drop.

The GI index ranks foods on a zero to 100 scale; in general, a GI of 1 to 55 is low, 56 to 69 is medium, and 70 to 100 is high — you should limit these high-ranking foods in your diet. If you know your GI values, you'll know that you need to avoid white rice, white flour, and packaged cereals, and choose whole grains, whole fruits, and other complex carbs instead. You can also choose foods that are low on the glycemic load scale, which measures the blood-sugar-raising power of that food. A glycemic load of 10 or less is low, 11 to 19 is medium, and 20 or more is high.

Following the glycemic index isn't a new concept, but it's a useful way to keep your eating habits in check when on the go. Knowing your numbers is a quick way to help ensure that you're making smarter choices whether you're at a party or just looking to get back on track. Check out a handy GI chart of a few seasonally appropriate foods below, and check out a list of GI and glycemic load values of 100 common foods here.
